GIPPSLAND South MP Danny O’Brien is urging the State Government to improve public transport for Poowong and surrounds.
Mr O’Brien met with locals, including Poowong publican Fiona Cox, who is asking for the town to be included on V/Line services between Melbourne and Leongatha.
“I’ve now written to the Minister for Public Transport on the community’s behalf, seeking to have at least one coach in each direction stop in Poowong,” Mr O’Brien said.
“While I expect a Poowong diversion would add some time to the journey, if this was for just one trip in each direction, it would be of great benefit to the people of Poowong heading to Melbourne, or Leongatha and Korumburra.”
Only two buses stop in Poowong each weekday. There’s one in the morning that travels from Poowong East to Warragul and one return service for the same line in the afternoon.
But to travel by bus to Leongatha or Melbourne, Poowong residents have to first drive to a bus stop at Loch or Nyora.
“I’ve asked the Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, to consider this idea and would welcome feedback from the community on how well it might be utilised.”
A spokesperson for Ms Allan said there are currently no plans to divert the Leongatha coach via Poowong.
“The proposal wasn’t raised during recent Regional Network Development Plan consultation, and feedback received by PTV calls for reduced travel times between Melbourne and Leongatha – diverting it via Poowong would add travel time.”
