Inverloch’s Joel Barry won the SXR 1500 Jet Ski class race at the Australian Watercross Championships in Queensland recently.

INVERLOCH’S Joel Barry was crowned champion at the AJSBA Australian Watercross Championships, after winning all four races in SXR 1500 Jet Ski class at Redcliffe, Queensland.
While being a long-time Jet Ski racer since he was 12, the 23 year-old did not originally intend on competing at the event, but a last-minute call up from Gold Coast Kawasaki jet ski dealer and team manager, John Moyle saw Joel book a flight the day before the event started.
Joel had never ridden the newly released SXR1500 stand-up jet ski until the day of the event, with only five minutes’ practice that morning.
The SXR1500 ski was deemed as being eligible for the GP class, but had to be ridden in stock form, unlike the remainder of the machines which had no restriction on allowed modifications.
There were four races with a combined score to determine the results of the Australian Championship.
Despite the lack of preparation, Joel managed to win all four races convincingly to take out the Australian title.
Although he did not intend to return to Jet Ski racing, this opportunity has now opened the door to attend the IJSBA World Finals in Lake Havasu, Arizona, USA, where he had a top 10 result in the Pro Ski class in 2014 and finished second in the junior limited ski in 2007.
Joel also competes in Freeride jet skiing and is currently competing on the International Freeride Association 2017 World Tour, which will see him travel to France, UK and Portugal for the first three rounds.
