WITH local RSLs organising Remembrance Day services across the region, this Saturday, November 11, there will be plenty of opportunity to pay your respects to members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
Toora RSL will hold a memorial service at the Toora cenotaph (corner South Gippsland Highway and Stanley Street) at 10.45am, followed by a barbecue at the RSL club rooms on Stanley Street.
Foster RSL will host a Remembrance Day service at the Foster cenotaph on Main Street, starting at 10.45am and concluding with a minute’s silence at 11am. After the service, everyone is invited back to the RSL club rooms at 48 Main Street, Foster for a barbecue.
Fish Creek RSL will conduct a Remembrance Day service at the Fish Creek cenotaph at Falls Road at 11am. After the service, join the RSL members for a cuppa and light lunch at the club rooms at 8 Lorrimer Street, Fish Creek.
At 10.45am, there will be a short service at the cenotaph on Whitelaw Street, Meeniyan.
As well as a short Remembrance Day service at the Leongatha cenotaph outside the Memorial Hall at 11am, Leongatha RSL will host two special events on Remembrance Day for ex-service men, women and their families, as part of South Gippsland’s inaugural RSL Active Weekend.
There will be a Personal Training Session from 9-10am, for all fitness levels and free for ex-service members and partners.
At 1pm come along to the official opening of the Veterans Business Hub, followed by a forum in the Hub Boardroom to discuss issues affecting the young ex-service community.

From 10.30am, Korumburra RSL will host a Remembrance Day memorial service at Coleman Park, 39 Queen Street, Korumburra.
Author of local war service book ‘Far from Home’ Tony Moon will give a speech on the activities of the Australian armed forces in 1917, including the battles of Beersheba and Passchendaele. All welcome.
From 10.30am, Mirboo North RSL will hold a half hour memorial service at the RSL Club at 16 Ridgeway, Mirboo North. Refreshments will be provided after the service.
A service will be held at Inverloch cenotaph on A’Beckett Street at 10.45am. Inverloch RSL Junior Vice President Richard Huntriss will give a speech to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Polygon Wood.
Bass Friends of the RSL will hold a Remembrance Day service, including wreath laying and a minute’s silence, at the Memorial Park behind the Grantville Transaction Centre from 10.30am. Vietnam veteran John Methven OAM will be the guest speaker and there will be a morning tea afterwards.
Starting at 10.50am, Phillip Island RSL will hold a brief commemorative service at the cenotaph on the Cowes Foreshore.
WONTHAGGI RSL will again be hosting its Remembrance Day service at the Wonthaggi War Memorial on Saturday, November 11 at 10.45am.
The service will be paying special homage to three soldiers Donald F Stewart, Donald J Featherstone and Duncan G McNair for their contributions to the country.
Three commemorative plaques with be unveiled in their memory as well as the traditional Remembrance Day service.
Donald F Stewart was a gunner in the Australian Artillery while Donald J Featherstone was a bomber navigator and spitfire pilot.
Duncan G McNair who was the only soldier from Wonthaggi to lose his life in Vietnam will be also be honoured with his own standalone ceremony at a later date.
All people are welcome to help remember these men and all the other men and women who have served or are currently serving for this country.
The Wonthaggi War Memorial is located in Soldiers Reserve on McBride Avenue.
