MERLEWOOD Angus at Mirboo North is breeding beef cattle to perform at optimum levels in Gippsland, specifically South Gippsland.
Stud principals Daniel and Anne Marie Barrow started with 20 cows and 230 acres in 2009.
They now have 750 acres, 250 registered stud cows and a loyal client base.
Merlewood is preparing for its second annual bull sale, on March 23, which will feature 35 bulls all registered with Angus Australia.
As part of Beef Week, however, a pre-sale preview will be held at Merlewood on Sunday, February 4 – day seven of the event, from 9am to 4pm.
Daniel and Anne Marie are proud participants of the Stock and Land Beef Week.
The event proved to be the launching pad for the stud. When last year’s inaugural bull sale was held, 55 registered buyers had already signed up, including many who were introduced to Merlewood through Beef Week.
At the pre-sale preview, visitors will meet the sons of Irelands Heirloom H343, Te Mania Jarcevo J545, Millah Murrah Kingdom K35, Merlewood Emperor H43, Irelands Heirachy H152 and VAR Reserve 111.
Common traits of the bulls are their temperament courtesy of grandsire Fletcher and thick hindquarters from Heirloom.
The bulls have been bred specifically in two groups to suit the needs of buyers.
One group for a 680kg frame, and the
other 620kg.
Some will be more suited to wet conditions than others. Some will like the hills, others prefer the flats.
All the Merlewood Angus team will be available for the pre-sale event.
“This is a great opportunity to take the time to talk about your breeding program one-on-one,” Anne Marie said.
“Sale bulls can be previewed at your leisure which allows for closer perusal with no pressure of having to bid that day.”
Anne Marie said Beef Week opened the door to potential buyers at Merlewood.
“If not for Beef Week, it would have been much harder for us, as new players, to break into the local market.
“We’re now well placed going in to our second sale. The first sale was a success.
“Buyers were pleased about the quality we have brought to the region and that they could buy bulls bred locally by locals.”
The 2017 sale saw 28/30 bulls sold to $9500 and average $5517.
Merlewood Angus is at 880 Berrys Creek Road, Mirboo North. Light refreshments will be available at the pre-sale preview.
