THE Belfrage family of Corinella will continue on producing fine Angus and Angus cross cattle for the trade but they are winding down their sheep and lamb production operation, more’s the pity.
Belfrage Pastoral, according to their long-term agent Russell Motton, have long been regarded for the quality of their Southdown lambs and breeding stock and their input will be a significant loss to the industry locally.
Mr Motton looked on as several pens of their best breeder ewes were sold at the VLE’s Leongatha Saleyards recently, destined to go on and lift the standards for those lucky enough to get their hands on them, or some of the top Southdown rams up for grabs.
“Bill Belfrage, the father and Bill the son have been clients of mine for a long time, 50 years I guess,” said Russell last week.
“They’ve always bought the best and produced the best Southdowns around here.
“They’ve decided to relinquish their sheep stud but they’ll be continuing on with their Angus and Angus cross operation.”
And they’re certainly going out on top, not only with their own ewes and rams attracting good prices at the recent special sale, but also with prime lamb prices continuing to be good.
“These originally came out of the Ballarat area with the best of breeding behind them and they’ll do a very good job for the buyers,” Mr Motton said, delighted to have been able to take such a valued client right through such a significant milestone.
End of an era for Belfrage Southdowns
