THE long-awaited redevelopment of the Mirboo North Pool, which once seemed like an impossible dream, has moved one step closer to happening with the recent passing of the South Gippsland Shire Council’s draft budget for 2018/19.
The budget contains an allocation of $3.8m for the redevelopment, one of the largest capital spending commitments towards a single project ever made by the South Gippsland Shire.
“It is further confirmation of the shire’s deep-seated support for the project,” Friends of Mirboo North Pool’s Fred Couper said.
“It’s a level of support that reflects the strength of feeling within the community for how important the pool is to us.
“While the shire commitment will ensure that the project will happen, to make it happen to the standard we wish for and within a timeframe that is reasonable, further fundraising still needs to take place.
“As momentum towards the redevelopment builds, so too will the fundraising efforts.
“With the detailed design process still underway it is not yet possible to give a specific start date for the project, nor can final costings be confirmed.
“Until that information is clear the full fundraising campaign will not be launched, but events will still be held in the coming months to give our community the chance to support this historic project,” Fred said.
First on the list is a ‘Giving Wall’ at the Mirboo North & District Community Bendigo Bank.
The Bank kick-started the fundraising campaign with a pledge of $100,000 in November 2017.
It will now host a ‘Giving Wall’ on which there will be 100 envelopes marked from 1 to 100.
The public will be able to choose a specific amount they wish to contribute at this stage and leave it in the corresponding envelope with a message of support.
This fundraiser will begin at the Mirboo North Community Bank at the end of the school holidays and run for three months.
Following on from this there will be a cinema night in July and a trivia night in September.
As the dates get closer keep an eye on local media and the Mirboo North Pool’s Facebook page for further information.
“The redevelopment of the pool is coming, and so will your opportunities to be part of something that is unprecedented and remarkable,” Fred said.
