Poowong’s 150th anniversary celebrations in full swing

POOWONG’S 150th birthday celebrations kicked off in fine style on Friday night, April 19 with the old Poowong Hall resplendent in decorations for the 150th Anniversary Old Time Dance, from 8pm to midnight with the band, ‘The Silhouettes’, playing dozens of old-time dance favourites.

The swirl of the dresses, the hum of conversation between tunes, it was just the way to get the party started.

And it continues today, Saturday with the centrepiece being the contest for the Demon Cup, between old foes, Poowong and Nyora down at the Poowong Recreation Reserve.

Meanwhile there are a lot of venues open around the town with history the feature; the fire station 10am – 2pm, the Poowong Library 10am – 12noon, the Mya Mya Café 10am – 1pm, the Tennis Club open during netball games, the Community Garden open with BBQ facilities, the Historical Group items on display at the Pioneer Chapel 10am – 12 noon and more.

Tonight there’s a BYO Basket Dinner, book launch, anniversary cake, art work unveiling and more at the hall, already fully booked out.

On Sunday, April 21 there’s the RSL Flag raising and wreath laying at the cenotaph at 9.30am, the Combined Churches Service with morning tea at 10am in the Poowong Public Hall, school tours from 11.30am – 1.30pm at the Poowong Consolidated School, the CFA Fire Station open from 10am – 2pm, Poowong Kindergarten 11.30 – 1.30pm, Historical Group historical items, vehicles  and farm machinery at the Pioneer Chapel from 10am –3pm, Landcare 11am – 2pm at CFA, the Poowong Hotel (open for meals, drinks and gatherings all weekend but with live music from 2pm on Sunday.
