Wonthaggi’s Butch West Oval last week.

BUTCH West Oval will not be ready for cricket until after Christmas. Whilst the majority of the surface sits in immaculate condition, drainage channels from recent sub-surface upgrades have been slow to regrow. Bass Coast Shire Council curator, Darren Green, said they were working to have cricket return to the ground as soon as possible. “It’s just a matter of growing in those drain lines so we can get them back on there. They are starting to grow in but we just need some more fertiliser, some sun and mowing,” Darren said. But the return date will be post the New Year break. “It’s a bit of short term pain for a long term gain. The drainage has done a great job, but because of the amount of rain we had we couldn’t get any of the heavy machinery on it because it was too wet,” Darren said.
