WHETHER you were after the freshest organic produce, a few new pot plants for the verandah or you simply wanted to relax in the shade with good coffee, Koonwarra Farmers’ Market was the place to be on the weekend. More than $500 worth of free, locally-grown produce was given away throughout Saturday morning to celebrate the event’s 12th birthday. Market manager Rod Faudell estimates around 1000 people poured through the gate at Memorial Park and Hall during the morning and all purchasers were given a raffle ticket each time they bought produce or plants from each of the 29 unique stalls present. Rod said the Koonwarra Farmers’ Market prides itself on containing the largest number of Southern Gippsland producers in one spot compared to any other market in the region. “We currently have 40 seasonal producer members in the association,” Rod confirmed. Rod added that the not-for-profit market continues to raise money for the maintenance and improvement of Memorial Park itself. He said that the market has raised around $40,000 for the park since it began in 2000 and many of the improvements, including a decking area next to the hall, were clearly evident.
