Web_D403213CONTROVERSY reigned at the first round of junior football finals on Sunday. In tough conditions the Under 11s and Under 13s played at Wonthaggi and Inverloch. The Under 11s game was marred by controversy, with confusion over an interchange bench overshadowing the youngster’s efforts from both teams. With only four minutes to go in the final quarter and Inverloch-Kongwak well in the lead at 4.2.26 to 2.3.15, a Phillip Island runner approached the umpires, alleging an interchange breach. A stop in play and line-up found Inverloch-Kongwak had 19 on the ground.

While the crowd speculated on the result, including the possibility of the young Sea Eagles losing their score, the umpires approached the scoreboard. In a collective sigh of relief from the very large Inverloch-Kongwak side, the umpires called for another three minutes of added time, taking out the last quarter to 15 minutes. Try as they might, Phillip Island couldn’t overcome Inverloch-Kongwak’s impressive scoreline. However, the controversy has not waned, with Phillip Island expected to contest the final result. As a result of the procedures likely to take place, president of the Alberton Junior Football League Craig Reid, who is involved with Inverloch-Kongwak, has been sidelined, his role taken over by league secretary Brent Ion. Ion agreed the result was controversial given changes to the rules on an interchange bench, but said on Monday morning, no official complaint had been received. “I’ve had a number of phone calls but no official complaint from Phillip Island has come in, so there’s no investigation at this stage,” he said. “However, we are compiling information in case an investigation is opened. “At this stage, the score will stand, Inverloch-Kongwak 4.2.26 to Phillip Island 2.3.15.”

The result sees Inverloch-Kongwak into the grand final while Phillip Island will fight for a second chance in the preliminary final against Corner Inlet this weekend. In the other Under 11 game in Wonthaggi, Corner Inlet took a hard fought win against Wonthaggi. Corner Inlet was showing some good skills with impressive ground work, but wayward kicking kept Wonthaggi in the game. In the end, it was a game that came down to soccered points rather than trying to kick the heavy ball through the goals – both teams only scored two goals each.

Under 13s
At a wet Inverloch ground, Inverloch-Kongwak and Dalyston had plenty to play for. A loss for either side and their finals campaign would come to an end. A win would ensure a preliminary final. Dalyston had recently accounted for Inverloch-Kongwak in Round 13, yet the Sea-Eagles were full of beans on Sunday. Inverloch started well and managed to have a handy lead at the main break only to be challenged well into the last term by Dalyston who kept the Sea-Eagles scoreless. Despite this strong last quarter by Dalyston, Inverloch-Kongwak held on to win by 11 points. Two goals ‘up the hill’ in the second quarter was the difference between the sides. In the other Under 13 game Corner Inlet fought back from a score-less first quarter to take the wind advantage in the second quarter. A goal by Xavier Duursma late in the final quarter for Corner Inlet put the score beyond doubt.
