Wonthaggi has long promoted itself as the ‘Gateway to Golden Beaches’ at Cape Paterson and Inverloch. These beaches are only 10 minutes down the road, so there is no justification for funding what would effectively be a second pool for Wonthaggi on the grounds of its residents being unable to get to a beach. Even most Wonthaggi locals concede that the proposal to spend millions of dollars on a Wonthaggi pool and nothing on Phillip Island is blatantly ‘Wonnycentric’, cynical and unfair. Surely the common sense solution is to build a pool on the Island, which Wonthaggi swimmers can then share while theirs is closed for upgrading. I urge councillors not to be bullied by their administration on this issue, and to be guided by what the community actually wants.
