ASPIRING young cricketers of all abilities are invited to come along to the Wonthaggi Cricket Gala Event at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve on Friday afternoon. The free event has been organised by a partnership between Glen Alvie Cricket Club, Wonthaggi Miners Cricket Club, Wonthaggi Workmen’s Cricket Club, Cricket Victoria, GippSport and the Active After-school Communities (AASC) program.
The partnership has been looking at ways to increase junior cricket participation in Wonthaggi and district and as such, has been active delivering coach training for club volunteers, running school based clinics at local primary schools and seven weeks of AASC programs. The gala event, from 4.30pm to 6pm, will be an opportunity for all primary aged children to give cricket a go in age specific activities including a beginner Prep to Grade 2 ‘Into Cricket’ session and a Grade 3-6 ‘Modified T20’ program. AASC regional manager Mark Lindsay said the event is part of a larger project called ‘Growing Cricket in Wonthaggi’, leading kids from school based cricket to club based programs. “Cricket is a fantastic game and having all three Wonthaggi-based clubs coming together is terrific,” Mark said. “The gala event will be a kick start for local programs, which will commence as the junior cricket season starts”.
In recent years the numbers of junior participants taking up cricket has steadily declined, prompting the partnership to focus on introducing local club coaches to the ‘Playing for Life’ philosophy, ensuring all kids have fun while playing cricket. “Sport needs to be fun,” Mark said. “By training local coaches and introducing clubs to a new delivery method and offering specific programs to each age group, we believe all children will enjoy it so much that they will then link to a local club activity,” Mark said. The Growing Cricket in Wonthaggi project team welcome all children to attend and find out more about what your local club has in store for season 2013/2014.
