LEONGATHA and District Cricket Association’s Under 14 side has taken out the title at Gippsland’s Junior Country Week held at Sale-Maffra last week.
The Under 14s won all five of their one day matches to claim the title on Friday, the first LDCA team to win at this competition since 1981.
The Under 14s started against Warragul at Rosedale in windy conditions and Warragul won the toss and batted, starting slowly before posting 7/136 off 40 overs.
Ben Perry’s 2/12 off eight overs and Aaron Bardwell’s 2/13 off two were the best of the bowlers.
Leongatha batted after lunch in very blustery conditions and were soon in trouble.
Requiring 13 off four overs, Matty Allen and Adam Honeysett were not out on 11 and six – picking up 13 off the last over including a five.
A great win with a great innings from Jacob Beckwith (70) being the standout.
Day two saw the locals play Central Gippsland at Bundalaugh.
Leongatha won the toss and batted, Koby Brann (26) and Jye Celebrine (22) had a 57 run opening partnership to post a healthy total of 160.
Three wickets from Aaron Bardwell and two from Damon Ginnane cleaned up the innings for 105, ensuring a 55-run win.
Game three faced the undefeated Traralgon at St Patrick’s College; Leongatha won the toss and batted.
Ben Perry (75) and Jacob Beckwith (28) helped the score to 5/151, a very good score with the slow outfield.
Traralgon started off badly with run outs from Jack Rosenow and then Adam Honeysett hit the stumps from fine leg to be 2/18.
They never recovered and were suddenly 6/34 and finished on 9/93, Ben Perry took two wickets for the locals.
Game four versus Bairnsdale at Stead Reserve; Leongatha won the toss and batted posting a massive 5/209, led by Koby Brann (37) and Jye Celebrine (52) and high scorer, Damon Ginnane (59).
Bairnsdale batted after lunch and Adam Honeysett led the bowlers taking two wickets to keep Bairnsdale to 7/156.
Day five against Sale-Maffra at Maffra; With Sale on three wins and LDCA on four wins and only 40 runs separating both teams, Leongatha won the toss and batted.
Koby Brann (24), Damon Ginnane (23), Ben Perry (52) and Alex Geyer (24*) got them to 5/187.
Sale batted after lunch but two wickets in two balls from Jack Hume saw wickets suddenly fall – all out 94 off 33 overs.
Damon Ginnane also took two wickets.
Three Under 14’s boys made the All-Gippsland team, including Ben Perry (batting), Jye Celebrine (batting) and Aaron Bardwell (bowling).
While the Under 14s had the ultimate success, the Under 15s found the going tougher on turf wickets winning one of their five matches.
The Under 15s had an up and down week, asked to bat on a damp wicket on Monday and missing out on an outright win by one wicket on Tuesday.
Playing Warragul at Rosedale on Monday, Leongatha struggled to 104 from 42 overs.
John Bastwrous (17), Connor Epifano (17) led the scorers. Warragul had an opening partnership of 80 and never looked back to be 6/266 off their allotted 50 overs.
Harry Marshall picked up two wickets for the locals.
Jack Keating made a huge hundred on Tuesday against Alberton at Bundalaguah.
Leongatha were sent in to bat, making 9/265 led by Keating’s 127 and Tim Sauvarin (53).
The pace bowling of Tom Officer was a standout; the pace he generated surprised many onlookers taking 3/20.
Two wickets from Flynn Brosnan, Liam Buckland and Tim Sauvarin had Alberton out for just 49.
Alberton were asked to bat again and the openers and were quickly 5/18 before a couple of stubborn partnerships left them 9/70 off the allotted 34 overs.
Liam Buckland took 4/14 with Tim Sauvarin 2/16 and Darcy Brosnan 2/14.
Leongatha won the toss and sent Traralgon in to have them all out 131 off 45 overs at St Patrick’s College on Wednesday.
Tom Officer took three wickets and Flynn Brosnan two.
Leongatha got off to a poor start in reply and were suddenly 3/7.
Adam Busana and Tom Officer added 31 for the 10th wicket but ended up losing by 40 runs.
Traralgon batted a second time and were 2/108 off 22 overs.
Day four was a bye before taking on Sale-Maffra at Maffra.
On a very good turf wicket the boys lost wickets consistently to be all out 113 off 34 overs.
John Bastwrous 24, Tim Sauvarin 22, Adam Busana 21* were the top scorers.
Sale Maffra batted and were 5/205 off their 50 overs; Liam Buckland’s 3/19 made him the pick of the bowlers.
Leongatha batting again for 16 overs were 5/77.
Connor Epifano (23) and Darcy Brosnan (14) were unbeaten.
Three players made the Under 15 All-Gippsland side, Jack Keating, Tim Sauvarin (batting) and Liam Buckland (bowling).
