WONTHAGGI Secondary College has kept its winning streak going, winning the South Gippsland Division of the School Sports Victoria annual interschool swimming sports on Tuesday.
In near perfect conditions, South Gippsland, Korumburra, Leongatha, Mirboo North and Wonthaggi secondary colleges battled it out in the Korumburra pool. Around 250 students participated in the 48th annual competition.
A real highlight of the day was Mikaela Cornelissen breaking five records – the open individual medley (2:44.61) – the old record was 2:48.03; the 16 year-old 50m butterfly (29.74) – the old record was 33.35; the 16 year-old 50m freestyle (28.17) – the old record was 30.41; the open 100m freestyle (1:03.33) from her own record in 2012 at 1:05.51; and, the 16 year-old 50m backstroke (33.37) – the old record was 37.08.
Mikaela was the only swimmer this year to break records. Her extensive training is clearly paying off!
But Mikaela’s outstanding times couldn’t get her school over the line, with Wonthaggi Secondary College’s consistency across the age groups delivering the school its seventh consecutive aggregate shield.
Wonthaggi Secondary College won both the boys’ and girls’ aggregate shields while South Gippsland Secondary College won the girls’ and overall handicap shield; Mirboo North won the boys’ handicap shield.
