HAVING qualified four out of four teams for the pennant golf grand finals at Foster last Sunday, Lang Lang looked a good chance to claim at least three of them partway through a dramatic day. The course was in superb order, there was no wind to speak of and the players enjoyed a balmy 23 degrees in what was a perfect finale to the pennant season. Korumburra Golf Club, which only narrowly beat Lang Lang in the qualifying rounds, was holding a solid lead in Division Four and went on to win it 5-2 thanks to a 1-up victory by veteran golfer Roger Hamill over Dennis Murphy and clear victories by Ian Cash 9-8 over Mark Hutchison, Athol Worthy 5-3 over Dave Hunter, Steve Osboldstone 5-4 over Bert Degrandi and finally, Neil Spargo 5-3 over Darren Tanner. Division Three was a closer contest with Lang Lang’s Jim Martela claiming a crucial win over Wonthaggi’s Paul Schultz on the 19th to give his team a 4-3 result. The other Lang Lang winners were John Ruddy 3-2 over Ian McDonald, Fehan Dunleavy 3-2 over Cory Jeeves and Geoff Cohen over Darren Tilley. In Division Two, Lang Lang always appeared to hold the advantage and came in with a 6-1 victory, which was closer than it looked in the end, with Tony Andrews and Jack Ingram each claiming their matches on the 19th against Dan Vanagtmaal and Jaye Foon respectively. Peter Sellers 4-3, Clinton Harris 3-2, Peter Bolt 3-2 and Todd Newey 3-2 were the team’s other winners. The Wonthaggi team of seven included three members of the Vanagtmaal family; Eric, Dan and Beau. The Division One pennant wasn’t decided until the final pairing of Brett McKnight and Peter McNeill took their match down the 19th; McKnight claiming the crucial victory for his team to win 4-3. The Division One matches were as follows: 7. Paul Perkins (LL) defeated Chris Buckland (M) 1-up, 6. Greg Austin lost to Graeme Hoskins 1-up, 5. Brett Mottrom lost to Alex Cairncross 3-2, 4. Brad Lovitt (c) def Ryan McKnight 5-4, 3. Peter McNeill lost to Brett McKnight (19th), 2. Colin Casey lost to Andrew Dunne 5-4 and 1. Andrew Villanger def Tim Miller (c) 4-3.
