BREAKING NEWS: Wonthaggi – Emergency services are at the scene of a major gas leak at the corner of Clark Drive and Baillieu Street, just 200 metres from Wonthaggi Hospital.
Gas was audibly spewing into the atmosphere when the ‘Sentinel-Times’ attended a short while ago.
Wonthaggi Sergeant Barry McCoy says the gas is dissipating quite well due to windy conditions.
The road has been locked down and a 20m exclusion zone put in place.
Sgt McCoy said the gas main was damaged by an excavator on the nature strip. CFA advises the leak currently poses no threat to the community, but people are advised to avoid the area. Residents close to the leak have been asked to stay indoors.
Weather conditions have made it difficult for emergency personnel who are going about their work in squally winds and driving rain.
