Former Leongatha woman and head coach of the Australian Diamonds netball team Lisa Alexander addresses her troops during their training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
LEONGATHA will be well represented at next week’s Commonwealth Games, with former local and Australian Diamonds netball coach Lisa Alexander joining teenage high jump sensation Eleanor Patterson and distance runner Kaila McKnight in Glasgow.
Alexander and her squad recently completed a week long team training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra ahead of the games.
The Diamonds currently hold the International Netball Federation number one ranking and are among the favourites to take home the gold medal.
Alexander has led the nation’s elite netball squad since 2011 when she took over the role of head coach from Norma Plummer.
A former state representative player and a member of the Australian senior wider squad, Alexander will be hoping to emulate the success she had as a coach of the former Melbourne Phoenix where she led the team to two title wins in 2002 and 2003 in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy.
It has been 12 years since the Australian Diamonds have won gold at a Commonwealth Games, but the team will start favourites after a big win in last year’s Constellation Cup against rivals New Zealand.
They will open their campaign next Thursday, July 24 against Wales.
