Suggestions by Cr Phil Wright that rates should be greatly increased to pay for expanded services have, unsurprisingly, met with heavy criticism.
Ratepayers already disadvantaged by inequities in the current system would be even worse off if rates increased.
When the Bass Coast Shire was formed in 1994 I chaired the Primary Industries Advisory Committee, assisting the then Commissioners in the transition process.
We recommended a Rate Review at the time because farmers were paying far more in rates than other sectors, for no greater share of council services. Our advice was ignored, and 20 years later the farm rates inequity remains unresolved.
We hope the promised Rate Review in this term of council addresses this issue as a matter of urgency.
