For too long local councils have turned a blind eye to massive inequities in the rating system.
In recent times, Cr Phil Wright has displayed his embarrassing ignorance of this reality in comments he has made supporting the current system.
There are several sectors of this community who are asset rich and cash poor, and who struggle with the rates burden.
Many retirees are on low or modest incomes and yes, there are single mothers on farms.
For many of these people the only opportunity they have to comfortably meet the rates burden is when the property is sold.
The suggestion by Lou Pecora (September 17) of a special charge on purchases has merit because it enables rates to be levied on those who have the capacity to pay.
Councillors, particularly Cr Wright, should give it careful consideration.
