THREE local soccer players were selected to play in the Gippsland representative soccer team recently.
The girls – Alyce Brusamarello and Jessica Tong from Wonthaggi United Soccer Club, and Finley Dempsey from Phillip Island Soccer Club, showed they well and truly deserved their spot in the squad on the weekend.
The girls were part of the Under 15 Gippsland team that participated – and won, the inaugural Lara Challenge Cup.
Brusamarello, who usually plays a mid-field striker role, Tong on the wing, and Dempsey in defence with forays forward, played five games.
The Gippsland team beat North Ballarat, Point Cook, Cardinia and Lara and drew with Surf Coast.
With a spot booked in the final, Gippsland was scheduled to play their toughest opponent – Surf Coast.
In the final, Gippsland took the initiative and won 3-0 to win the cup.
The Lara Challenge Cup aims to increase opportunities for girls to participate in soccer.
It will now be an annual event with the possibility of a similar tournament to be held in Gippsland early in 2015.
Organisers hope to include a younger age section in future tournaments to increase the opportunities for girls to develop their soccer skills.
