Rates-RortThank you for the table comparing the shire rates for equivalent value properties for Leongatha, Wonthaggi and Dandenong in last week’s (November 18) Sentinel-Times.
Based on the figures, Leongatha’s rates are about $400 to $1200 higher or 50 per cent higher than Wonthaggi and twice that of Dandenong.
Factors given as contributing to the dearer rates such as,
– South Gippsland covers a larger area
– Cost shifting from other levels of government
– There are more people in other shires and
– To provide the services people want; are not satisfactory.
The article’s comment that “something’s rotten about the level of rates in country areas that is a symptom of waste, inefficiency and lack of accountability by shire bureaucracies…” must be addressed.
It is time we took the action required to make our shire(s) not only comparable but competitive.
Steve Finlay, Leongatha.
