Winners of the Phillip Island leg of the Subway Summer Surf Series Under 16 Girls competition were Phillip Island’s Sophie Fletcher and Shayla Paterson, Torquay’s Isabell Cook and Jan Juc’s India Robinson.
INTERSTATE competitors have dominated the eighth stop on the Subway Summer Surf Series at Phillip Island.
With a large swell and strong westerly winds, competition was moved to Summerland’s Beach, home of the Penguin Parade, which provided clean 3ft waves for competitors.
Byron Bay’s Kian Shahar peaked in the final of the Under 18 Boys, locking down 17.33 points, the highest heat total of the event, to claim his first victory in the national series.
Placing in second was Ryan Slattery with a 15.00; Phillip Island’s Sam Dunlop was fourth.
In the Under 18 Girls, Palm Beach’s Lucy Callister comfortably claimed her second victory at a Subway Summer Surf Series event over Jan Juc’s India Robinson, Phillip Island’s Courtney Dunlop and Jan Juc’s May Fox.
India Robinson showed that she is ready to take the next step with a solid win in the Under 16 Girls.
Putting the field in a combination situation, Robinson tallied a heat total of 15.67 points.
Placing in second was Phillip Island’s Shayla Paterson, with Phillip Island’s Sophie Fletcher and Torquay’s Isabell Cook in third and fourth.
Organised by Surfing Australia and proudly supported by Billabong, the 13-event series will be held around Australia this summer showcasing the country’s best male and female surfers in the Under 16 and 18 age divisions and the recently added Under 21 category.
Each event is expected to attract as many as 100 surfers vying for the top honour.
