Business names such as Workways, Employment Innovations Victoria and dozens of other job service providers have been assigned to the scrap heap this week by the Federal Government.
At the start of the new financial year in Bass Coast, for example, these services will now be offered by Max Employment, which has been established in Billson Street, Wonthaggi for the best part of a year now, and another soon-to-opened employment services provider, Sureway Employment and Training.
Sureway is set to open at 152 Graham Street on Wednesday, July 1, which is none too soon as their contract to provide services starts on that day.
How long it will take them to set up and accept clients from Centrelink, while establishing links with businesses, other employment providers and training organisations is anyone’s guess.
But we should at least give this new era in employment services, called ‘Jobactive’, an opportunity to help improve the chances for local jobseekers in their quest to find a suitable position.
Assistant Minister for Employment Luke Hartsuyker said that the new $6.8 billion Jobactive employment service, which starts on 1 July 2015, would see a fresh mix of new and existing firms delivering employment services.
It will certainly see a lot fewer employment services providers and in Gippsland we’ve seen the impact of this.
And it’s unlikely to be business as usual either for those out of work and on social security benefits. They will be expected to participate in ‘Work for the Dole’ programs providing meaningful work and skills development designed to improve the client’s chances of getting a job.
Those registered at Centrelink have already been advised, by mail, of the changed arrangements but it would also be handy if the government let the general community in on how it was helping jobseekers, especially our young people and school leavers, to be better prepared for the workforce and ultimately to find work.
So, we’ll be watching with interest to see how the new approach to job services and training plays out over the coming months.
