ROGER and Claire Davis were astounded to read in the council’s Spring 2013 issue ‘South Gippsland Matters’ that culverts at Markleys Road were completed.
Mr Davis, who lives at Markleys Road, Mirboo North challenged council to show him the culverts.
He said the reported culvert, which was possibly done on private property, cost $148,000.
A previous costing of a culvert project at Markleys Road was $70,000.
“In ‘South Gippsland Matters – Spring Issue 2013’ it was stated that the culverts in Markleys Road had been completed,” Mr Davis told council on at a recent the budget submissions hearing.
“The work in question was at 120 Markleys Road and only benefits one property.
“If you say the culvert is done, show me! There are none!”
Mr Davis said the 2.1 metre pipes used on the project, replacing pipes of “around one foot diameter”, were installed on a gated property and is of little benefit to ratepayers.
He added the part of the road, which is lower than the bridge over the Tarwin River West branch, still regularly flooded.
Mr Davis was informed the culverts were funded by the Federal Government, but coordinated by South Gippsland Shire Council.
Councillors said Mr Davis’ report raised many questions: costings, benefit to the community, and questioned its reporting process.
While Mr Davis was calling on council to fund the original $70,000 culverts in his budget submission, councillors would only confirm they will investigate the matter.
