The Leongatha courts were busy all through Sunday with 40 teams, associated managers and parents, friends and spectators all enjoying netball played to a very high standard.
Regional development manager for Netball Victoria Judi Buhagiar said around seven talent scouts were in the crowd to watch the games from 13 and Under to 17 and Under.
“Every team in each division played against each other in a round robin tournament,” Ms Buhagiar said.
“The top four made it into the semis, and then into the grand finals.
“The winners of each championship division will now progress through to the final round at Waverly Netball Centre on Sunday, June 18.”
Those winning teams include: 17 and Unders from the Gippsland League; 15 and Unders from the Alberton League; and, 13 and Unders from Gippsland League.
“The talent scouts were particularly there for the 15 and Under teams and they identified a number of players,” Ms Buhagiar said.
“Yesterday [Sunday] Netball Victoria also launched a new development pathway for the 13 and Unders, so an additional three scouts attended for that.
“It is all part of the preparation for zone academy selection.”
Ms Buhagiar said the competition was high pressure and the teams completed fast and furious eight-minute half games.
“Usually there were only a few goals in it – it was thrilling to watch.
“Defence is usually a really big part of the championships, because it’s so quick – the players were really tested.”
Amongst those to be tested was the Leongatha and District Netball Association, who hosted the championships.
Ms Buhagair said the association did a “fantastic job” ensuring the day ran smoothly.
She also praised the association and leagues who participated, saying it was impressive so many associations and leagues want to give their players (and selected umpires) an opportunity to develop.
