NEWHAVEN teenager, 17 year-old Lachie Smith, recently competed in the 2015 Cressy Descent held at the You Yangs Mountain Bike Park.
The annual event attracts some of Australia’s elite gravity enduro and downhill riders.
The race is held over two days with Saturday and Sunday morning official practice followed by one single do or die timed descent of the famous Track 13 after lunch on Sunday.
Saturday started out with rain showers which made for perfect practice conditions.
Unfortunately the sun appeared on Saturday afternoon and with 250-odd riders doing up to 10 practice runs each, the track dried rapidly to become loose and dusty.
Lachie used all the available time over practice to really fine tune the track and this was proven and justified on a scorching race run that had him actually catching the competitor in front of him about three-quarters of the way down.
Considering each competitor has a 30 second interval between runs, it was an outstanding effort which unfortunately prevented Lachie from overtaking the rider in front.
Lachie finished three seconds off the B Class podium and just five seconds off first place – an amazing effort in only his second gravity type event.
Lachie said he was still very happy and excited by his run and the Go Pro footage from his helmet shows just how quick and smooth his race run was.
Lachie is now training hard and looking forward to the upcoming 2015-2016 Gravity Enduro series and also the Victorian Downhill Series as well.
