WONTHAGGI players once again made up the bulk of the Victorian Under 19 Underwater Hockey team which won bronze recently at the national titles held in Western Australia.
Seven of them have been selected to play for Australia against New Zealand in July.
Locals in the state team included Jaqueline O’Connell, Ben and Dylan Rielly, Roy Trumble, Tom Robinson, Lisa Mildenhall, Dylan Furneaux, Lachie Cox, Clay Duke, Briely Robinson, Sarah McBeth Curtain, Jack Martin (Warragul); (Womens) Kiaha Jones.
Due to a lack of numbers, Victoria’s U15s were not represented so three players from Wonthaggi stepped up to help a struggling Queensland side.
They were Lee Duke, Ben Robinson and Brad Peters.
Of the 109 players who’ve represented Victoria in Underwater Hockey, 74 have come from Wonthaggi.
Next best is Geelong with 19, then Warragul (11), Melbourne (4) and Ballarat (1).
Wonthaggi plays underwater at 7pm every Thursday night at the Wonthaggi Pool.
