$40 MILLION is a huge windfall, and the Leongatha community will be sharing in the winnings thanks to the generosity of last week’s Oz Lotto winners.
The winners, who are anonymous, vowed to share their prize with the community.
It could come down to $7500 for each person in Leongatha; but don’t be counting on getting a cut immediately – the winners are taking a moment to set themselves and their family up, before giving to the community and “good causes”.
The winners took three days to claim their prize – not even aware their ticket, bought at the Leongatha Nextra Newsagency, had all seven winning numbers.
“It’s a big, big shock!,” the couple said through a statement.
“Someone told us to check our ticket and it turned out that it was us all along – we thought we better let you know to stop looking.
“We’ve checked the numbers on our ticket over and over but they still haven’t changed!”
The stunned winners, a married couple who have lived in Leongatha for many years, came to the staggering realisation late at night that their 36-game QuickPick in Tuesday night’s $40 million Oz Lotto draw was the division one winning entry that everyone had been talking about.
“We’re still taking it all in and trying to grasp the size of our win!” the couple continued.
“The thought had never ever even entered our minds that we would win a $40 million jackpot prize!
“Even when the numbers are right in front of you, you still don’t believe it!
“We’re just going to take our time to absorb this incredible news.”
The winning couple said they have always had plans to share any good fortunes that came their way.
“It’s always been our plan that if we won the lottery, even $1 million, that we would share the money with the Leongatha community and many other good causes – and now that plan has just grown a lot bigger,” the winners explained.
“Giving some back is what it’s all about; we fully believe in that.
“This windfall is more than enough to look after our family and we’re not greedy, so all we’ve been thinking about is how else we can help.
“I don’t even think we’ve made any plans for ourselves yet!
“The biggest change for us after winning will be being able to retire and not being under the clock.
“It’s amazing what you can do with more time to enjoy the things you love.”
The winning numbers in Oz Lotto’s $40 million draw 1162 on Tuesday, May 24 were 22, 32, 25, 11, 38, 4 and 5. The supplementary numbers were 20 and 40.
Thrilled with local winner
Nextra Newsagency Leongatha manager Nicole Whiteside has no clue who the winner is.
“It could’ve been sold by any one of us,” she said from behind the desk. “Only the winner would know who served them, so I can’t say we were part of the luck!
“A lot of people are coming and asking who it is, but we have no idea.
“We’re just so excited for them and very proud that it’s someone local.
“We hope it’s one of our regulars, but mostly we hope the winners enjoy their life even more now.”
Nextra owner Peter Watchorn said the $40 million win was a boost for the business and the community.
“It’s great news for the area and it has really put Leongatha on the map!” he said.
“We’ve had lots of our local customers asking us about the win and they are all really excited and happy that it’s our outlet that has sold the winning entry.
“Fingers crossed the luck rubs off on some of our other local customers. They say good things happen in threes so we’re hoping for some more wins for the South Gippsland region.”
The winning ticket was the third Division 1 winner sold from the Leongatha agency in under six years – a lucky town indeed!
