WONTHAGGI’S Division 1 Pennant skipper Danny Crellin steered his team to victory against Meeniyan in Sunday’s grand final with a 3/2 victory against Brett McKnight.
Overall Wonthaggi won 4.5 to 2.5 but it didn’t look good early when Chris Buckland had a big 6/5 win against Julian Wintle.
But comfortable wins to Beau Van Agtmaal over Matthew Dunne (4/3), Matt Johnson over Alex Cairncoss (5/3) and Peter Dell over Ryan McKnight (5/4) put Wonthaggi in control.
Michael Scott fell to Meeniyan’s Tim Miller (2/1) before Crellin sealed the deal.
Wonthaggi’s in-form veteran Ian Baker squared his match with Andrew Dunne.
Division 2 was an absolute thriller. The result wasn’t confirmed until Leongatha skipper Tom Sorrell nailed his short put on the last hole, set up after a ridiculous approach from the low side on the 18th to win 1up against Wonthaggi’s Daniel Van Agtmaal.
After Wonthaggi’s Mark Tiziani and Glenn Hewlett had comfortable wins against Chris Leaver and Anthony Sparkes, Leongatha fought back with nail-biting wins to Bruce Hutton over Matt Stanes (19th), Tom Williamson 1-up against Ryan Van Agtmaal, and Matt Bowie 2-up against Eric Van Agtmaal.
Leongatha’s Russell Williams had his game squared away against Joe Burke 2/1 which meant the result hung with Sorrell who calmly finished the job as Leongatha took the pennant 4-3.
Leongatha also won Division 3 against Meeniyan with a 4-3 result, despite skipper Chris Indian losing heavily to Andrew Horvath 6/5.
Ben Ferrari-Meli won 5/3 against Col Olden and Brendan Simon won 4/2 against Paul Robinson to get Leongatha back on top.
Joel Sinclair squared the match for Meeniyan with a 1-up win against John Dalton.
Bryan Sword gave Leongatha the edge again with a 2/1 win against Brian Dewar, but Meeniyan’s Phillip Johnson had a 2/1 against Nathan Wardle.
The result didn’t matter though as Peter Dowling had already claimed a big 7/5 for Leongatha against Will Bullock.
In Division 4, Leongatha was again victorious against Wonthaggi.
Dan Poynton came within a whisker of acing the 10th, used as a play-off hole, and his birdie secured the win for Leongatha 4.5-2.5.
He defeated Steve Laing in an epic battle.
It meant Wonthaggi’s James Jordan and Leongatha’s Bryan McCorkell could relax after squaring their battle.
Earlier, Leongatha’s Mark Anderson had a comfortable 7/5 win against Ian Cunningham, Denis Wallace won 2-up against Peter Foon, and Colin Bear took out Ben Clark 3/2.
Wonthaggi’s winners were young Alex Geyer who won 2up against Andrew Bassett and Allan Cubban who had a narrow 2up win against Peter Jaspers.
