NOTHING could be done to save Waratah Lodge at Fish Creek after a devastating fire completely destroyed the $2.5 million building on Sunday.
Owners Judy and Richard Edwards were at church when fire ripped through the boutique hotel on Thomson Road.
The fire broke out about 11.45am, with the building fully alight by the time fire fighters arrived just before midday, a CFA spokeswoman said.
Fire fighters were unable to save the building.
Operations Officer for the CFA Bill Alards said the building collapsed completely, luckily with no one inside.
“The owners were at church at the time, and the neighbours called the fire in.
“When they got to the lodge it was completely alight at that time,” Mr Alard said.
In a Facebook comment posted on Sunday evening, owner Judy Edwards described the overwhelming loss of the lodge.
“We are really devastated that the lodge has gone. I cannot begin to describe the loss,” Judy wrote.
“We had our first weekend with no guests in 12 months so we went to church. While we were there the lodge, which we had worked so hard on, was burnt to the ground.
“It hurts and I just don’t know what we will do going forward.”
The Edwards family purchased Waratah Lodge in 2012, and had recently completed renovations on the building.
Detective Syd Hadley was at Fish Creek yesterday investigating the incident, in an attempt to determine the cause of the blaze.
It is not yet known what started the fire at the property.
