CHILDREN and families from across the region travelled to Leongatha for the inaugural Gippsland Country Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday, June 25.
Members of various Little Athletics clubs across the Gippsland region raced at Mary Mackillop College, competing to qualify for the State Cross Country Championships.
Meet manager Mark Jouvette was impressed with the turnout and talent on the day.
“There’s a load of good talent here today,” Mark said.
“We have really high quality runners in the Gippsland region. The kids competing here today mean business.”
Girls and boys aged from Under 9 to Under 15 competed on the day, running distances from 1.5km up to 3km.
“Several of the kids racing here today will go on to represent Australia in the sport, I am confident of that,” Mark said.
“There’s a wealth of talent here.
“The only trouble is keeping hold of them before they get distracted by football or hockey!
“Gippsland is the biggest geographical area outside of Melbourne for this sport.
“Kids travel from across the region, from Cardina right up to Bairnsdale and beyond – kids come from all over just to compete, which is wonderful to see.”
