CALF rearing is an area where farmers can always improve their skills.
A Young Dairy Network evening in Fish Creek next week will have an in-depth look at issues surrounding the raising of healthy calves.
YDN Gippsland coordinator Irene Baker said the evening would prove beneficial for any farmer trying to maximise their success rates during a tough season.
“We have Leongatha vet Peter DeGaris speaking on the night, which should provide plenty of food for thought for those who are building their calf rearing knowledge,” Irene said.
Key topics to be covered include
• Rearing from birth to weaning
• Colostrum quality
• Milk types and volumes
• Grain/Pellets and hay
• Best practices to rear healthy calves including shedding and bedding
• Common calve diseases including management
• Calf vaccines
The night will be held at the Fish Creek Hotel on Wednesday, August 24 from 7pm, with a ‘parma and schooner’ deal available for just $20 at 6.30pm.
“We are really encouraging young farmers to come out for a night where they can learn a key dairy skill as well as relaxing with a beverage and a chat with some fellow farmers.”
RSVP by Monday, August 22 to Irene on 0428 889 337, 5624 3900 or at Irene@gippsdairy.com.au
