THE Bass Coast Shire Council has endorsed a concept design for the new Cowes Cultural and Community Centre, part of the $17.75 million Cowes revitalisation project.
This includes the three catalyst projects of the Cowes Cultural and Community Centre, the Jetty Triangle and transit centre.
Designs in the draft plan for the centre include provisions for an expandable multi-purpose community hall, a 200 person theatre, and the potential to extend the community hall to accommodate for 300 seats should additional funding become available.
Detailed costings for the Cowes Cultural and Community Centre project estimate the building cost, inclusive of fixture, fittings and equipment, at $11.5 million.
This figure is $1.6 million more than early estimates.
In order to pay for the project, the council has sought $5.5 million from the Federal Government and $4.75 million in state funding.
The State Funding Living Libraries fund is contributing $750,000 to the project, with the council itself allocating $6.5 million to the construction of the centre.
The Cowes and San Remo Bendigo Community Bank has committed $250,000 towards the project.
