LANG Lang Golf Club hosted the final South Gippsland Women’s Golf Association event for 2016.
The Joyce Berry 4BBB Par Championship has been held annually for almost 40 years. Joyce Berry, in whose honour the event is held, was a Captain and Champion at Wonthaggi Golf Club for many years as well as holding long term positions as a South Gippsland delegate and Country teams member.
The Lang Lang Community Bank Branch of the Bendigo Bank sponsored this event and the trophies supplied were presented by Paul Vaughan, Manager of the Lang Lang branch. The Bendigo Bank will continue this valued sponsorship next year.
Winners of the Championship, and not their first, were Rebecca Thomas and Mary Brewis from Leongatha Golf Club. Rebecca and Mary combined well to finish with 79, four strokes ahead of their nearest rivals Anne Walker and Marg Johnson from Wonthaggi Golf Club.
Yvonne Trask and Cheryl Owen from Lang Lang Golf Club, teamed well to win the Minor Scratch with 92.
Another Lang Lang combination, Libby de Hay and Cath Briant won the A Grade handicap event with an excellent +7. The club handicapper will need to have a close look at this card.
The B Grade handicap section was won by a well-deserved pair who had made the long trip from Welshpool to compete in the event. Jeanette Swan and Trish Latch, disadvantaged by playing in a large group at the end of the field, had an excellent score of +6.
There was a plethora of down the line balls given out due to the generosity of the Lang Lang Community Bank Branch of the Bendigo Bank: Anne Walker and Marg Johnson (Wonthaggi GC) and Lianne Adamson and Coral Gray (Leongatha GC) +3, Irene Holm and Faye le Page (Meeniyan GC), Lee Clements and Beryl Brown (Korumburra GC) and Cathy Jones and Dawn Andrews (Phillip Island GC) +2, Toni West and Helen Fraser, Trish Owen and Maxine Eabry (Leongatha GC), Anne de Leeuw and Lee Andrews (Lang Lang GC), Ivy Ruby and Chris Hamilton, Marg Ryan and Maree Anderson (Wonthaggi GC), and Julie Howard and Loris Clark +1, Rachel Brown and Peta Barlow (Welshpool GC), Ann Poole and Shirley Thomas (Woorayl GC), Sue Hoskin and Sheila Constantine (Meeniyan GC) and Heather Sullivan and Marg Tuckett (Woorayl GC) -1 on a count back.
Rhonda Boyd from Phillip Island GC was closest to the flag on the 5th, Rebecca Thomas on the 9th and Mary Brewis on the 15th.
The South Gippsland Women’s Golf Association executive would like to extend thanks to the Lang Lang’s women’s captain Sue Purser and her committee for their excellent organisation in running the event.
