TWO boxers from the Wonthaggi Boxing Club have come away with wins from the recent Golden Gloves competition in Brisbane.
Held from August 25 to 28, the competition saw the two Wonthaggi lads competing against some of the very best novice fighters in Australia, with up to 430 boxers competing.
Charles Joma, who turned 17 in the middle of the tournament, has been boxing in Wonthaggi for the past three years.
Having competed in various competitions across the country including Tasmania, Cairns, and Adelaide, Charles has had 14 previous fights.
He competed in the 64kg division for his age bracket in Brisbane, coming away with a win and the coveted Golden Gloves title.
“It felt really good to win,” Charles said.
“It was hard work, but great fun.”
Lachie Lewis competed in his first competitive fight, and won the Golden Gloves for the 12 year old age bracket, School Boy Junior.
“He won in his first competitive fight, and we’re really proud of him,” coach Scott Williamson said.
“We’re proud of both the boys for working really hard to get competition fit. Boxing competitions like the Golden Gloves is always such a great opportunity to meet new people and new clubs from across the country. It’s great for the kids, and helps to motivate them.”
