POOWONG defeated Cora Lynn 20 to 16 in the Ellinbank and District Netball Association grand final on Saturday at Garfield.
In perfect conditions for grand final day, the early bird supporters were treated to a strong start from Poowong, taking an early two goal lead.
Cora Lynn rebounded with great defensive pressure and stormed back to take a one goal lead into the first break.
The pressure continued from the Cobras into the second quarter, turning over the first centre pass.
But Poowong were quick to answer, capitalising on a defensive turnover of their own.
Poowong started to take control of the quarter, with most possessions being in their attacking half of the court.
The Cobra defenders continued to make their opponents work hard for their rewards, but Poowong managed to edge in front by one goal at half time.
Poowong used the third quarter to stamp their authority on the match, with strong defensive work from EDNA best and fairest, Ellie Robjant, leading her team well to extend their lead by another four goals.
The intensity lifted in the final term and Cora Lynn’s defensive tenacity was rewarded, reducing the margin to one goal.
But Poowong kicked away again to be four ahead at the final whistle. Final score 20-16.

ELLINBANK defeated Poowong in a thriller in B Grade, winning 41 to 39.
The first five minutes of the match went goal-for-goal, until Poowong finally broke through to take a three goal lead.
Ellinbank struck back to level the score, and proceeded to steal the lead away to take a two goal advantage into the first change.
The Bankers started well in the second, breaking through Poowong’s centre pass.
But Poowong maintained their game plan and a highly competitive period resulted in the scores being all tied up at the main break, 16 all.
Poowong got the jump on the Bankers in the third, but Ellinbank kept their cool to level the scores once more.
The quality and evenness of play was exactly what we like to see in a premiership battle.
The Bankers managed to get their noses in front by two at the final break, setting the scene for an intense run home.
Ellinbank were unyielding in the opening minutes of the last quarter and increased their lead further.
But Poowong weren’t done yet and worked hard to again see the scores level.
After some exciting ‘back-and-forths’, the Bankers again managed to edge in front and at the final whistle they had held on for the win, 41-39.
