THE Wonthaggi Womens team is through to the grand final after a 3-1 win over Leongatha Knights at Drouin.
Wonthaggi has had a hugely successful season this year, finishing on top of the ladder with favourite star Alyse Brusamarello taking out the GSL league Best Player Award.
For only the second time in the club’s history, Wonthaggi Women team made the finals.
Wonthaggi started strong with its strikers taking it all the way to the keeper several times, but it wasn’t until a great play saw the ball passed to forward Sarah Arthur who chipped it in over the keeper to give Wonthaggi the first goal.
Wonthaggi kept the pressure up and it wasn’t long before a brilliant run by Alyse Brusamarello saw Wonthaggi take a 2-0 lead.
Wonthaggi’s defensive clearances were amazing and the team headed to the half time break with a comfortable lead.
Leongatha came out firing in the second half and really kept up the pressure.
It wasn’t long before Kathy Zacharopoulos showed why she is the leagues Golden Boot and brilliantly weaved through the Wonthaggi defence to put one on the board for Leongatha.
Wonthaggi’s keeper Kerie Allen was kept on her toes for the remainder of the second half, making some amazing saves.
Both teams were struggling with control as the ball bounced back and forth, when a stray ball found the arm of a Leongatha defender giving Wonthaggi a free kick.
Alyse stepped up to take the kick only metres from the half way line and magnificently placed it high in the top corner of the net, taking Wonthaggi to a 3-1 lead and its first ever Grand Final.
Phillip Island overcome Inverloch
Phillip Island progressed to the Grand Final with a 4-1 win over Inverloch.
A few shots on goal from both sides started the match before Leonie Gilbert scored the first goal of the match for Inverloch from a free kick.
Phillip Island quickly turned things around and evened up the scores not long before half time at one-all.
Phillip Island started to gather momentum in the second half with their second and third goals given them a handy lead.
A free kick to Phillip Island in the box after a handball saw the Island score its fourth goal and record a convincing win.
