THE Leongatha Cycling Club held the first of a tri-series of events at Poowong on Saturday September 24
Although the rider numbers were down on what was expected, those who participated enjoyed the event on a warm spring day.
Scratch races were the event format with four grades riding a short hilly 17.5Km course.
With 22 riders competing in the event the grades comprised A grade with six riders riding three laps of the course, B grade with five riders riding two laps, C grade with six riders riding two laps and D grade with five riders riding one lap.
There were five riders from other clubs competing on the day.
Adding a touch of humour to the day, an anonymous red devil appeared during the event on the Loch-Poowong road climb into Poowong, but even the devil was not enough to inspire some riders who found the hilly course too demanding by not completing the last lap.
The climb back to Poowong had the riders stretched out as they crossed the finish line, with Stuart Smith winning A grade, Matt Parkinson finishing second and Austin Timmins finishing third.
B grade was won by Oliver McLean, with Leigh Stott finishing second and David McFarlane finishing third.
C grade was won by Conner Bagot, with Damien King finishing second and Shaun Donaldson finishing third.
D grade was won by James Williams, closely followed by Kaleb Jans in second and Robyn Baker in third.
After a successful event, a social get-together with the trophy presentation to the winners along with the Road season awards were held at the Poowong Hotel.
