Only one candidate, out of the whole field of 24 up for election, has mentioned the issue of rural rates.
Most genuine farmers on larger working farms in the Bass Coast Shire have been paying around $10,000 annually, or about nine times the average residential rate.
The current council reduced that gap. Now they pay about eight times the urban rate.
Following the recent crash in the dairy market, it would be helpful if candidates would clearly state whether they intend to act to address this glaring inequity.
