In response to Phillip Island published piece (October 11) re Wonthaggi Pool.
I am compelled to state that I have examined the entire contents of the Minute Book (held by the Wonthaggi & District Historical Society) and find the following to be of importance.
The initial public meeting was held on April 18, 1968, chaired by the Mayor Cr J Elkin.
Present for Phillip Island were the president of the Shire Cr D Atkinson and Cr W Papworth.
Mr N Hamilton and the Shire Engineer Mr Jock McKechnie, with both Cr Atkinson and Cr W Papworth assuring the complete support of PI Shire.
At that meeting Mr H Simcox was elected Chairman and Mr MS Brumley as Secretary.
The funds raised to be for the Wonthaggi & District Memorial Pool.
At a later meeting Mr Sam Russell was elected as Treasurer.
In April 1972 it was resolved that monies collected be used for a 25 metre heated pool.
Years went by with no further reference to Phillip Island.
In 1975 at the Annual Meeting I was elected to the position of Chairman of the committee, with Harry Simcox being thanked for his monumental work as Chairman and at no cost to the committee while raising the $40,000 this committee had agreed to.
Eventually on April 19, 1977 the Borough of Wonthaggi Council agreed to fund the Pool.
On October 17, 1978 the Education Department agreed to provide $31,000 for the pool.
In 1980 the Pool was built with the committee disbanded November 18, 1980.
There were obviously comings and goings over the 12 years.
I can state that apart from some financial involvement by individuals from Phillip Island the only record I can find in the minutes is from the Cowes Children’s Benefit Club a $10 donation.
I thank all those who were involved with the committee over the years most sincerely and a particular thanks to John Hedley who was with me from the start to the finish.
Examination of Minute Book list major donations – Shire of Bass $3000; Rotary Club of Wonthaggi $1500.
I do not wish to start any controversy but to answer claims made by Mr McMahon, secretary Phillip Island Aquatic Centre Fund.
I am proud that the vision and fundraising efforts of our community has provided a facility which continues to service all Bass Coast residents.
The minute book and all other documents are held by the Wonthaggi & District Historical Society.
Bill Robertson, Chairman of Pool Committee 1975-1980 and a member since forming.
