POULTRY producers from far and wide visited Wonthaggi recently for a Free Range Poultry Workshop.
The workshop focused on disease management and biosecurity for free range poultry.
Dr Yoni Segal from the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs and Training talked about disease management and common diseases in poultry, and Elise Davine from Ridley Ag Products talked about feed management for free range chickens.
Dr Will Hume from the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs and Training talked about significant disease investigations and how poultry farmers can have disease investigation undertaken when needed.
Phil Chaseling from the Australian Egg Corporation talked biosecurity and salmonella protection with egg production.
Emma Brown from Korumburra free range egg farm Glorious Googies spoke about her experience as a chicken farmer and the growth of the business.
Dr David Beischer from the Wonthaggi Veterinary Clinic said the forum aimed to provide technical information to small producers and equip them with resources that are available to help their business.
“There are a lot of bigger poultry businesses that farm close to 50,000 chickens and they’ve got resources provided and a bigger company to back them up,” he said.
“We felt there was a need to provide a forum so these people can have a bit of technical information and know where to source information they need as they build businesses.”
