A TRIO of South Gippsland’s brightest young basketballers have been selected to represent Australia Country in New Zealand after dominant performances at the Australian Country Junior Basketball Camp in Albury recently.
Poowong’s Nick Prowd and Phillip Island’s Pat Ryan and Keith Robinson are part of the under 16 squad that will compete in the Mel Young Easter Basketball Classic at Easter.
Phillip Island Basketball Association President, Terry Robinson, said the trio’s selection in the team was great for local basketball.
“It’s a great achievement for Phillip Island and we’re very proud of them,” he said.
“They started in Aussie Hoops when they were five and come all the way through the ranks at our club and we’re really pleased to see them get recognition and go overseas.
“For Nick to play for Poowong and next thing be representing Australia is an awesome achievement.
“Pat and Keith play for Phillip Island in various competitions and Nick plays for Poowong, and the three come together and play for Korumburra in State League on Friday nights. They represent Korumburra which is essentially a South Gippsland representative team, and play for their own local associations in tournaments.”
The boys returned from the Australian Country Junior Basketball Camp recently, where the top 20 Country Victoria basketballers were split into two teams which played off against other country teams from South Australia, Tasmania, NSW and New Zealand.
Nick and Keith were part of the Goldminers team which won the tournament, and Patrick played for the Bushrangers team.
The top 10 players from Country Australia during the tournament were chosen in the squad to travel to New Zealand.
Nick is a strong inside big man, Keith is a tall and athletic rebounder and scorer, and Pat is a skilful left-handed ball handling guard who can shoot well.
