LEONGATHA’S Tuesday Pennant team broke a 35 year drought when it defeated Inverloch in the Division 1 final last week at Korumburra.
The Leongatha team were in control for most of the contest and pulled away at the end to win by 12 shots 16/70 to 0/58.
Great celebrations followed the final rink to finish in which Marj Person’s girls defeated Anne Tschiderer’s 21 to 16.
Leongatha’s Division 3 team that went down to Mirboo North in a thriller spilled out onto the green to congratulate their club-mates.
In the centre of it all were mother and daughter combo Jenny Miller and Angie Hackett.
Jenny, the South Gippsland Bowls Division’s singles champion, is also a member at Loch, but was granted a dual membership to allow her to play with Angie.
Her addition to the squad helped immensely, along with the experience of Marj Pearson and Leonie Hanks in recent times.
Leongatha finished third on the ladder at the end of the regular season but saved their best until when it mattered most.
After many years rising and falling between Division 1 and 2, the first pennant in 35 years has been well celebrated.
In another exciting result, Port Welshpool secured a promotion to Division 1 with a win against Tarwin Lower.
The tiny little club barely has enough members to field pennant sides with men and women part of the teams that play on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
As mentioned, Mirboo North had a narrow win against Leongatha in Division 3 and Inverloch won against Corinella in Division 4.
