WONTHAGGI Club might have taken the chocolates in the all-important Saturday fixture against Leongatha Town at the weekend but you can’t win them all and Town exacted some retribution in Sunday’s 20/20 grand final.
And in so doing, they lifted the first silverware of 2017, and sitting in fourth position on the ladder, are still in position to do some damage later in the season as well.
Having won their semi-final in good style, Town produced a competent ‘team effort’ with the bat to set Club the difficult target of 175 for victory in the final, played at Scorpion Park.
Amila Ratnaike top scored with 32, but useful late-order hitting by Ash Hickey 30 and Jareth Hume 29 added to a quick-fire 26 by Madura Weerasinghe, including five 4s, and it looked a really good total.
Club started steadily enough but the fireworks really started when Ryan and Mitch Thomas came together in a partnership of 84.
Mitch went huge for a six to make it 1-76 off first 10 overs but they were just getting started and regularly hit 6s each over, sometimes tantalizingly close to fieldsmen on the boundary and then once, juggled and dropped in the field.
But it wasn’t until Amila Ratnaike, fielding at long on, threw a long-range return into the stumps at the bowler’s end for the unlikely run out of Mitch Thomas on 63 that the match started to turn Town’s way.
Ryan Thomas continued on but when Madura Weerasinghe rattled up five wickets in his last two overs, Club’s challenge faltered after what had been an exciting match.
Semi Final results: Semi-final No.1: Town 4/112 (M Weerasinghe 50, A Ratnaike 35, P. Dell 2/17) defeated OMK 9/109 (T Wyatt 43, M Borschman 3/27). Semi Final No.2: Club 104 (R Thomas 37, K Brann 27, D Wyhoon 2/21 S dole 2/27 defeated Korumburra 66 (K Dorman 17, R Thomas 4/11, R Birkett 4/12).
