NERRENA’S hopes of avoiding relegation have been severely dented by Korumburra quick Luke Zanchetta, who snared five wickets in A Grade Division 1 at Korumburra Turf.
The Cobras had the Red Caps on the ropes from the start, with Dale Wyhoon having Dave Trotman caught at 1/0 before Zanchetta removed Steve Lester and Tim Wightman in quick succession.
When Wyhoon sent Jarrod Hoy packing and Zanchetta bowled opener Damien Symmons, the Red Caps were reeling at 5/25.
A steady flow of wickets continued, before Gerard Murphy and Josh Trease showed some resistant with a 51-run partnership for the ninth wicket after they came together at 8/43.
The Red Caps were eventually bowled out for 122 in the 50th over, with Murphy remaining 49 not out including seven fours and a six, and Trease departing for 33 including seven fours.
Zanchetta finished with impressive figures of 5/41 off 20 overs including eight maidens.
It was his second consecutive five-wicket haul and he now has 33 wickets for the season.
Wyhoon was also handy with 3/23 off 7.4 overs and Shane Dole bowled tight with 2/20 off 18 overs including nine maidens.
The Cobras are on track for a win, finishing the day at 2/62 off 25 overs.
Even if the Cobras win, though, the Red Caps could survive depending on what happens in the match between Killy–Bass and Club.
Peter Edwards hit 27 including four fours before he was caught off the bowling off Ryan Clark, and Kallon Rigby was trapped LBW by Tim Wightman in the dying stages for 17.
Inverloch is in a strong position after scoring 300 against OMK at Outtrim.
The Stingrays got away to a flying start with an opening stand of 107 between Walter Taberner and Brett Debono.
Taberner was first to go for 37 including five fours, and Debono continued to bat with flair and hit 85 including 13 fours before he was caught off the bowling of Sam Jenkins.
Tom McQualter (37 including four fours and a six) and Warren Williams (50 including four fours and five sixes) continued to attack the bowling.
Captain Kit Rotthier put the finishing touches on the innings with a brilliant 62 not out including six fours and four sixes, as the Stingrays reached 9/300 at the end of 75 overs.
Peter Dell was the pick of the OMK bowlers with 2/73 off 22 overs including seven maidens.
Wonthaggi Club is on track for an easy win over Kilcunda-Bass after bowling the Sharks out for 125 at Bass.
The Club bowlers were ruthless and shared the wickets around, with Ryan Thomas, Jakeb Thomas and Ryan Birkett snaring two wickets each.
Mark McCall cleaned up the tail with 3/12 off four overs as the home side was bowled out in the 50th over.
John Bastwrous top scored for the Sharks with 34.
Club batted 26 overs in reply and reached 4/101 at stumps, led by Sam Huitema (30 including six fours) and Koby Brann (22 not out).
Andrew Donohue picked up 2/17 off eight overs for the Sharks.
Amila Ratnaike’s 75 helped Leongatha Town reach a solid total of 234 against Phillip Island at Scorpion Park Turf.
Ratnaike hit five fours and three sixes and was well supported by Matt Borschman (34 including seven fours), Matt Smith (32) and Scott Browne (30).
Charith Keerthisinghe toiled for the Island with 4/74 off 30 overs including eight maidens.
The Sharks faced six overs to end the day and Matt Dennerley was trapped LBW by Madura Weerasinghe in the final over of the day to see the Island resume at 1/13 this week.

Wickets tumble at Meeniyan

BOWLERS have dominated the contest between Poowong-Loch and Meeniyan so far, with 15 wickets falling on day one of A Grade Division 1 at Meeniyan.
Poowong-Loch lasted 52 overs before being bundled out for 126, with Darien Mathews the key with 3/18 off 11 overs including six maidens.
Michael Patching also bowled well with 2/14 off 10 overs including eight maidens.
Adam Fisher top scored for Poowong-Loch with 47 including seven fours.
But the Poowong-Loch bowlers turned the tables on the Demons, to have the home side in trouble at 5/30 off 23 overs.
Al Jenkins bowled experienced opener Gary Webster for two and Matt Loader had Darien Mathews caught for one to leave the Demons reeling at 2/4.
The onslaught continued with Loader removing Nick Eddy and Matt Olden and Jordan Poynton taking Tim Harris’ wicket at 5/10.
Joel Sinclair (10 not out) and Cam Olden (nine not out) regrouped and will be the key to the home side’s chances this week.
Loader finished with 3/4 off six overs including two maidens.
Paul Palmer’s 77 has seen Glen Alvie post a defendable total of 237 against Foster at Butch West Oval.
Palmer combined with John Reid (52) for a 125-run partnership for the fourth wicket before he was eventually caught after hitting 11 fours.
Daniel Hales put the finishing touches on the innings with 44 including five fours.
Harvey Griggs bowled well all day, picking up 4/65 off 29 overs including nine maidens.
Imperials have the upper hand over Koonwarra-Leongatha RSL at Leongatha Turf after an eventful 13 overs to end day one.
Imperials batted first and were bowled out for 199, led by Jack Ginnane’s 72 and Rowen McLennan’s 43.
Jason Kennedy was the pick of the Cougar bowlers with 3/28 off 13 overs and Kevin Thorne snared 3/43 off eight overs.
But Imperials came out firing to end the day, reducing the Cougars to 4/25 after 13 overs.
Luke Rogers was the destroyer with 3/8 off five overs including two maidens.
