IT’S hard not to focus on finances at the moment if you’re a dairy farmer, even with the pleasing improvement in the latest Global Dairy Trade auctions two weeks ago.
So any distraction, whether it be footy or a family occasion is welcome.
Which is why members of the local branch of the Harry Ferguson Tractor Club are planning a big tractor rally.
And you’ll need to get your skates on if you want to be involved… it’s on this coming Sunday, April 9.
It’s easy!
Simply muster, with your tractor, any tractor, at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve from 8am onwards, this Sunday, and be ready to leave at 9am for a 80km course led by the Fergie tractor club’s Russell Sanders, Area Coordinator for the Harry Ferguson Tractor Club.
“Come in any sort of tractor as long as it’s registered because we’ve been given clearance by VicRoads to hold the rally,” said Russell.
“We stop at Glen Forbes for morning tea put on by the Fergy club ladies.
“Then we travel via Kernot to Krowera and then back to the Glen Alvie Cricket Ground for a sausage sizzle lunch cooked by the Rotary Club of Phillip Island.
“Food will be supplied by the tractor dealers of Leongatha. It’s a family lunch and anyone can come along to that but we don’t want the cars following on behind the tractors. It’ll be too long.”
The convoy of tractors then heads back to the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve by approximately 3.30pm 4pm.
“Why are we doing it? To get the farmers out and off their farm,” said Russell.
“I’m an earth moving contractor but since the cut in milk price, I lost quite a few jobs myself and spoken to others who have as well.
“This is just a day out for stress relief.
“There’s plenty really feeling it at the moment.
“You can tell they’re doing it tough when they can’t afford to do this or that. This is a chance to come out for a shared activity, to have a yarn and a bit of fun. They only thing it will cost you is the cost of fuel.”
Even at such short notice, Russell is hopeful of getting 100 or more tractors – old and new.
So just get into your tractor and roll, to the Wonthaggi Recreation, on Sunday, April 9 before 9am when the rally kicks off.
“It should be a pretty impressive sight.”
Those interested in additional information should contact Russell Sanders 5678 2373 a/h or John Harris 0438 635286, or simply come along with your tractor at the end of the day.
