THE South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club’s annual ‘heifer tour’ was held on Wednesday, May 10.
About 20 members enjoyed travelling between the farms in perfect autumn weather to see some of the future stars of the club who should shine in the next few On Farm Challenge competitions.
“It’s also a good way to see what genetics are working or not working for others and to give you confidence to use some of those bulls in your own mating program,” Tanya Privitera from the club said.
The first stop for the day was the Vagg family farm at Leongatha South.
Gordon and Ben Vagg hosted along with their farm manager Paul Cocksedge.
The first lactation heifers were mainly sired by Tbone, Elton, Valentino, Sandblast, Vanahlem, Legal, CRVMarvarie, Navarian and Borat.
Club members then walked across the road to see ‘Glenjuristan Jerseys’ owned by the Moscript families.
Chris, Tanya and Julie Moscript hosted and led the group to the main sires Raceway and Irwin.
“We saw their Raceway and Tahbilk daughters that had been pictured in a recent GA catalogue,” Tanya said.
After lunch the club moved onto ‘Summit Jerseys’ run by Shawn and Tracey Hollingworth from Koonwarra.
The main sires here were On Time, Eclipes, Tbone and some outstanding Valentinos.
The last farm was ‘Krishlaye Jerseys’ – the Harrisons who farm at Nerrena.
“Here we looked at all their Jerseys as they only have 30 in total, but it was a great visit.
“A very exciting group of heifers are to calve this winter/spring by Tbone, Galaxies and Valentino.
“We also saw the cows (in milk and dry) sired by Topeka, Region, Vanahlem and Eclipes.”
New members are always welcome. If you’re interested in joining the club, contact the Tanya Privitera on 0408 649 259.
