WONTHAGGI Fire Brigade Captain, Kim O’Connor, had a busy end to his stint in the top position last weekend when there was a spate of eight callouts in two days.
The list of fires/callouts included five overnight on Friday night/Saturday morning including a blaze in a chimney, one in a skip bin, an alarm at the hospital and a petrol leak in the early hours of Saturday morning.
There was also a callout to a fire in Broome Crescent on Sunday, which resulted in a major drug bust by police, and a fire in a shed in Graham Street allegedly started by kids setting off a small explosion.
“I must add I didn’t attend all the fires but it has been a very busy weekend for the brigade,” said Captain O’Connor at the scene of the shed fire, on land near the rear of KFC in Wonthaggi.
“It’s winter but it’s often the busiest time of the year with heating being heavily used and problems occurring,” Mr O’Connor said.
The local fire captain is due to handover to a new captain after the annual presentation night next weekend.
