SURE, we’d like a Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, Big W, Officeworks, Bunnings IKEA and David Jones in Korumburra (some might not) but it’s not going to happen because the volume simply isn’t there.
Apparently Coles and Woolworths both did their sums on the Korumburra supermarket proposal but couldn’t make it stack up financially and it’s only because Michael’s IGA already has skin in the game that they are prepared to invest here.
They can’t make it work renting someone else’s building either, so we are told that the owner of Michael’s IGA, Michael Lorenz, is prepared to take on the project himself.
It will take quite some time before he gets a return on his investment but he can see the community needs a full-service supermarket and he’s prepared to back us.
There are a number of exciting outcomes:
1. It unlocks major investment by the shire in a new library, community hub, and streetscape improvements.
2. It will reorientate and reinvigorate the main street shopping centre making it more palatable to locals and the passing trade.
3. It will involve an extra 20 to 40 jobs in retail in the town.
4. It will inevitably lead to better outcomes for existing traders.
And hopefully it will finally allow us to get rid of that disgracefully dangerous brick footpath that has so plagued Korumburra for years.
It’s great news, let’s all embrace it.
