WHEN visiting the beautiful Agnes Falls, even though the bushland picnic grounds are picturesque, and the view of the falls themselves quite spectacular, there is always some frustration at not being able to get a better view of the whole of the falls, nor to be able to fully appreciate the full 59 metre drop into the gorge below.
There have been plans on the drawing board, for some years now, to have a cantilevered viewing platform built out from the gorge lookout, so that visitors can see the full view of the falls, down into the gorge, and along the valley, in a safe manner, not taking risks leaning over the railings, or, even jumping over these railings, to get that perfect photograph.
In spite of the best efforts made by members of the Friends of Agnes Falls (FoAF), with the full support of the South Gippsland Shire Council – and their willingness to contribute significantly to the costs of such a wonderful addition for the enjoyment of seeing the Agnes Falls – to date no State or Federal grant applications that have been submitted have been successful.
To this end, FoAF is now considering setting up a dedicated bank account, named the ‘Cantilever Fund’, and would like to ask each of their 1800+ ‘Likers’, and other supporters to consider making a $10 donation (or more) towards this fund, to show the “powers that be” that the community would truly value such an improvement at the Agnes Falls Scenic Reserve.
Direct banking details are: ‘Friends of Agnes Falls Inc’; Bendigo Bank, Toora Branch 633-000; Account number: 147450258.
Use “Cantilever Donation” as your reference.
“We would be pleased to issue a receipt if you give us your name and address,” said Friends founding member Kathy Whelan OAM said.
Also, a working bee will be held on Sunday, June 25, from 10am to 1pm, when members will undertake a number of minor tasks, including litter collection, raking of bark and twigs off the walking tracks and car park, clearing and stacking fallen bark and branches from within the picnic grounds, weeding, and more landscaping.
If you would like to join in, BYO tools, refreshments, and some lunch items to share.
New members are welcome to join FoAF at any time (annual adult membership is $10 per financial year, or $25 for a family with children under 15).
